Downtown Marquette shops hoping for summer surge in tourism

MARQUETTE, MI— Marquette businesses have struggled over the past few months due to a lack of snow.

The warmer, dryer winter canceled several downtown events that businesses rely on to stay afloat. Tourism has been returning slowly to pre-COVID levels, but the shortfall of snow has been an issue.

Baraga County Sheriff's Office to procure new equipment

BARAGA, MI— Equipment is getting upgraded at the Baraga County Sheriff’s Department.

County Commissioners approved the upgrade of tasers and computer systems this week. Tasers that will be given to deputies will now fire

10 shots instead of one before needing to recharge. The costs will be covered by COVID relief funds.

A new unified computer system will also be put in place rather than using multiple systems. Sheriff Joe Brogan says records are currently being kept in three separate systems.

Houghton Keweenaw Child Advocacy Center receives accreditation

HOUGHTON, MI— The Keweenaw Chamber of Commerce is holding a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Houghton Keweenaw Child Advocacy Center this week.

The center aims to support children who are victims of sexual assault and physical abuse.

Men’s hockey took on their Upper Peninsula rival the Michigan Tech Huskies in a weekend split starting in Houghton. Defenseman Colby Enns scored the first goal of the game, keeping a Wildcat lead through the first and second period. The Huskies came back with three goals in the second period, though Forward Reilly Funk fought back in the third with his first goal of the season. Diversity in Disability brings awareness to epilepsy

Every month, the NMU student organization Diversity in Disability chooses a disability to shine a light on to spread awareness. On Dec. 9 at 10 a.m. Diversity in Disability is hosting an epilepsy awareness fun run/walk at the Superior Dome.

The night finally came on Nov. 30 for the Northern Arts and Entertainment (NAE) Noah Richardson concert with Iridescence. From the announcement of the concert to weeks of planning and promoting, the excitement and anticipation paid off.

On Sunday, Dec. 3, NMU Campus Cinema and Special Events Committee hosted the infamous double feature “Barbenheimer”.

Oppenheimer started at 3 p.m. with Barbie following at 6:30 p.m. Outside Jamrich 1100, pink and black decorations were spread all over the hallway with themed candy, snacks and refreshing strawberry lemonade. There was also a costume contest, with best-dressed awarded to the best Oppenheimer and Barbie dressed before each movie.

Excitement, laughing and screaming was spread throughout the evening at the Northern Arts and Entertainment (NAE) Noah Richardson Concert featuring Iridescence on Nov. 30 at the Northern Center Grand Ballrooms.

The two groups sang a collection of their own songs, along with a few covers mixed in. Iridescence brought party hats for their crowd and Noah Richardson passed around a disposable camera along with throwing his t-shirts into the audience.

On Sunday, Dec. 3, the famous double feature, “Barbenheimer” will be showing in Jamrich 1100. Campus Cinema, with help from the Special Events Committee, is putting on a pink runway with a Barbie-themed photo booth for the event.

The first movie, “Oppenheimer”, will be showing at 3 p.m. with “Barbie” following at 6:30p.m. Dressing up for the event is encouraged for a best-dressed contest, along with the usual concessions and a poster raffle for the two movie posters.

On Thursday, Nov. 30, Northern Arts and Entertainment (NAE) will host a concert with artist Noah Richardson and featuring a local band, Iridescence. The performance will be at the Northern Center Grand Ballrooms with doors opening at 7:30 p.m.

A shrimp’s tale: a dive into the Jacobetti Complex aquaponic tank

Deep in the back of the newly renovated Jacobetti Complex is the Indoor Agriculture Lab, containing a room full of plants and a giant aquaponics tank full of shrimp. Aquaponics is a form of agriculture that combines raising fish in tanks with soil-less plant culture. Instead of traditional soil, plants grow in nutrient-rich water.

The 400-gallon tank has about 50 Malaysian prawns living in a closed ecosystem with a variety of plants like lettuce, beans and herbs floating on top.

The Lydia M. Olson Library hosted The Northern Michigan University Wildpups on Oct. 5. All the original furry friends were there, including Sal, Hugo, Madison, Ben, Boris, Ramsey, Rosie and Molly putting smiles on students’ faces and relieving everyone’s stress. The final 2023 homecoming event, Dead River Games, took place on Sept. 17. The Dead River Games is a series of competitions, such as the ice cream drop and obstacle course, that take place at Clark Lambros Beach Park annually. This year also included volleyball for fun in between the usual competitions.

The NMU Homecoming Parade toured through Third and Front Street on Friday. The parade consisted of floats built by Wildcats, from athletes to student organizations who showed up to show off their student pride.

Maneuvering a healthy beginning to the semester

It is that time of year again. Students are returning to school, fall is underway and flu season is back. With the mixing of students in a big, populated area and sharing common spaces, germs are bound to be passed around.

Students flood Academic Mall for Fall Fest

Northern Michigan University’s annual Fall Fest took place on the first day of classes on Aug. 28. Fall Fest is a day where students, faculty and staff get a chance to see all the clubs on campus and resources they have access to.

While walking around and seeing all the tables and tents may be overwhelming, it is meaningful to see how many activities and events students can get engaged with. Clubs ranging from sports to science had plenty of goodies to offer like stickers and candy.

Tis’ the beginning of hockey season with Northern Michigan University’s Helmet Night, hosted by NMU Puckheads. Students gathered in the Wildcat room at the Berry Event Center on Oct. 25 to celebrate the beginning of the season by decorating yellow helmets. The NMU hockey team was there, interacting with students and signing helmets as the evening went on.
